Fresh avalanches delay re-opening of Srinagar-Leh highway

Fresh avalanches at several places have delayed the re-opening of Srinagar-Leh highway, police said on Friday.

A traffic police official said that the fresh snow avalanches near about ten to twelve places has delayed re-opening of the strategic highway that connects Ladakh region with Kashmir.

“There were about ten to twelve fresh snow avalanches at different locations on the highway which are being cleared and due to which the re-opening has got delayed,” said the official.

He said that the Beacon authorities have completed snow clearance operation on the highway, which was closed in November last year due to accumulation of eight to ten feet of snow, particularly between Sonamarg-Zojila and Meenmarg.

Earlier this week, confusion prevailed at Srinagar-Leh highway as hundreds of vehicles, including load carriers laden with essential commodities, reached Gund and Sonamarg areas, ahead of the reopening of this strategic road.

The vehicles were awaiting a nod to move towards Kargil. However the police didn’t allow any vehicle to move ahead from Gund, which led to a massive traffic jam on the highway.
