Hundreds of youth ‘volunteer’ to guard Mirwaiz after govt withdraws his security cover

Srinagar: Nearly 200 youth turned up on Monday at the Awami Action Committee’s (ACC) office in Rajouri Kadal Srinagar and volunteered themselves to guard the Hurriyat (M) chairman a day after the government withdrew his security cover.

On Twitter, AAC said since Monday morning hundreds of boys are swarming to register themselves for Mirwaiz Kashmir Umar Farooq’s personal safety.

An AAC functionary said scores have been shortlisted to guard Mirwaiz and act as his security personnel.

Taking to Twitter, Mirwaiz said he was overwhelmed by the love and affection showered by the young men by volunteering themselves for the security cover.

“Moved by the love and affection of these young men, my gratitude to their selfless love,” Mirwaiz tweeted.

On Sunday, state government led by Governor Satya Pal Malik withdrew security cover to four separatists including Mirwaiz in the aftermath of Pulwama attack in which 49 CRPF men were killed last week.

“All security and any vehicles provided to the separatist leaders would stand withdrawn by Sunday evening,” officials had said.

The separatists, however, termed the withdrawing of the security a non-issue for them.

“The government and its propagandist anti-Kashmir media has repeatedly been racking up the issue of police personnel provided to the resistance leadership to politicize, knowing fully well it has no bearing, nor can it in any way change the reality of the lingering Kashmir dispute,” Hurriyat (M) had stated in its statement.
