The vehicular traffic on Sonamarg-Drass road of Srinagar-Leh highway resumed on Thursday afternoon after remaining closed for hours since early morning.
Officials said due to fresh snowfall last night at least four inches of snow had accumulated at Zojila on the highway turning the road slippery. This has forced traffic suspension for some hours.
He said, the BRO put men and machinery in service and cleared the road for the traffic.
Divisional traffic police inspector at Sonamarg told Greater Kashmir the traffic was being regulated on the Zojila stretch according to recently issued joint schedule of traffic authorities and civil administration.
Officials said that subject to favorable weather conditions and road clearance, the movement of light motor vehicles shall be allowed from both sides and the of the heavy motor vehicles it shall be one-way on alternate days.
“The vehicles from Drass will be allowed from 0500 hours and shall cross Sonamarg by 1100 hours and accordingly after the last vehicle crosses Sonamarg, traffic will be allowed from 1100 hours till 1600 hours from Sonamarg towards Drass.”
Officials said that that no vehicle shall be allowed to move either way after the cut off timing.
