The Changing politics of Leh

Politics in India is often described as being contentious, debatable, provocative, controversial and exasperating.  Ladakh has been the focus of national attention with the BJP’s political upheaval of 2014 parliamentary election and almost a majority in LAHDC election 2015 successively.  It created an unexpected level playing field, where anyone with political ambition and talent was in with a chance.

In the last three years of LAHDC-L, this open field has now taken a different shape into a robust political machine with new faces, new leaders who represent the new BJP. And that changes a few things when one talks of any kind of rejig in 2018.

Politics is the means to effect change in governance, take  responsibility and ensure accountability. With the recent resignation of chairman LAHDC Leh, people confused politics with governance. In this regard different individual have different perspectives about the prevailing change, it’s all depends on which side of the spectrum you stand and there is a perspective always.

However, recently the BJP MP from Ladakh resigned from the house as well as from the party primary membership urge us to think and deliberate on the issue. It seems that with the elevation of Ravinder Raina who was a ‘Pracharak’ of RSS before joining BJP in 2010 known for his hardcore RSS ideology as a new head of Jammu and Kashmir BJP unit, trying hard to spread the Saffronized wings in Ladakh region by linking Hinduism with Buddhism, which attracts the younger generation of BJP members towards it because the old legacy was not able to fulfill the pre-election promises which created a rift between the old and new generation workers. Although in other perspective it seems that the high command of BJP is trying to clear the way for an aspiring outsider to bring into BJP.

Moreover, the rise of a new BJP is really the big political change. This essentially means a gradual takeover by a new class of younger generation who are mostly inspired by core RSS ideology, where they implicitly spread hatred against Kashmir and Kashmiri Muslims and always raising a slogan of free Ladakh from Kashmir.

Hence, perpetuation of the politics of communalism and hatred remains implicit. That is how the BJP has been in seat of victory in the recent parliamentary and other elections.
