Two day international workshop on advances in hysteroscopy and laparoscopy surgeries in gynecology concluded at Lal Ded (LD) Hospital today.
Marking an attendance of over 200 doctors from across country and varied backgrounds, Kashmir Endogyn Update 2018 was organized at LD Hospital on 22 and 23 September. The workshop showcased live hysteroscopy and laparoscopy surgeries beamed to a participative audience of gynecologists and obstetrics, general surgeons, and doctors from other specialties.
Day one of the workshop saw experts demonstrating hysterectomy procedures on patients while day two was exclusively for laparoscopic procedures.
Noted hysteroscopy expert, Prof Osama Shawki who teaches at Cairo University and has an operating license in 56 countries. Prof Shawki is known for Shawki artery coagulation forceps widely used in GIT endoscopic.
Dr Hafeez ur Rehman, the renowned faculty in laparoscopic surgeries conducted the live workshop and demonstrated surgeries in a number of patients. Patients with uterine pathology, ovarian and uterine tumors and infertility were operated upon in the state-of-art modular theatres. Experts demonstrated the efficacy of the showcased surgical techniques and underlined their importance in reduction of hospital stays, and morbidity in addition to being less invasive translating into lesser blood loss and smaller surgical scars compared to traditional ways of operating. Sunrise technique of LTH, live interactive workshop, hysterescopic resection of submucous fibroid and uterine septum were showcased at the two day event.
Prof Samia Rashid, principal Government Medical College Srinagar (GMC) was the chief guest at the event and Prof Wazira Khanum, ex-principal and ex-head of gynecology department was the guest of honor. Prof Khanum, among others was felicitated on the occasion.
Chairperson of the workshop, Prof Shehnaz Taing who is also head department of gynecology and obstetrics, underscored the need to develop gynecology and obstetrics as two separate specialties to optimize the skills and care for women. On the same note, Prof Farhat Jabeen, head of advisory committee, said that due to the load of maternity care on the hospital, there were lesser opportunities to develop advanced gynecological specialties at the hospital. “We hope, in future, we are able to take this hospital and the skill set of its human resources to a much higher level,” she said. Dr Samiya Mufti was the organizing secretary of the workshop.
