Shalteng hit-and-run case: Month on, justice eludes victim’s family

Every time toddler Muhammad Yahya’s utters “Baba”, it brings sadness to whole Khan family at Kanitar Saderbal area here.

Khan family’s cheerful world was shattered last month, when their son Kounsar Majeed Khan (40) was grievously injured after being hit by a vehicle at Shalteng area here. Last week, Kounsar succumbed to his injuries after battling for life for a month in intensive care unit (ICU) of SKIMS Soura here—leaving behind his wife and two-year-old son.

Despite passing of over a month, police is yet to arrest the accused involved in Kounsar’s accidental death.

“On the fateful day, I along with my elder brother (Kounsar) was at Mechanical division Shalteng for some official work. At around 4:30 pm, he told me that he would offer prayers at local masjid on other side of the road,” said Zubair Ahmad Khan, Kounsar’s younger brother.

“At around 5:10 pm, I called on his phone number. But to my shock, there was a policeman on other end.  He (policeman) told me to come to JVC as my brother has been injured in an accident. I rushed towards the hospital, only to see my brother profusely bleeding on a stretcher,” he said as tears welled up in eyes.

The family said they came to know through some pedestrians that Kounsar was hit by a speedy two wheeler. “Even police has mentioned it in the FIR,” said Kounsar’s brother-in-law, Dr Nuzhat Ali.

Though Kounsar’s family has reconciled with the fate, but they want the accused to be booked under law. “This was destined for him (Kounsar). We would have even forgiven the accused. Who knows it might have happened by a chance? But the way the accused left Kounsar bleeding profusely on road gives us a feeling that the person doesn’t have an iota of humanity,” Dr Nuzhat said.

Some three years ago, Kounsar, an engineer from prestigious NIT Srinagar had left his job in Saudi Arabia to settle back in his homeland.

“He was into business of supplying mechanical and other equipments. He was married some two years ago. He was living a happy life. Least did we knew that destiny had something else in store for us,” he added.

The family now wants the accused to be arrested at the earliest. “We don’t want any other family to go through the trauma that we are undergoing. The accused should be brought to justice, so that it serves as a deterrent. Besides who knows that was it a mere accident or there was some conspiracy involved in it,” he added.

While conversation was on, an aged person sat quietly in the room. After few moments, he broke the silence.

“I have lost my pious son. I have realized how painful it is for a father to carry coffin of his young son,” said Kounsar’s father, Abdul Majeed Khan in an emotional tone.

Police said the case is under investigation.  “I am supervising this case. We have checked all the nearby workshops and are also analyzing CCTV footages,” SDPO West, Musadiq Basu told Greater Kashmir.
