SHRC seeks report on blood transfusion ‘reaction’ at SKIMS

The State Human Rights Commission on Friday sought a detailed report from health authorities into recent deaths at SKIMS Soura allegedly due to reaction caused by blood transfusion.

Taking suo motto cognizance in the case, the Commissionordered commissioner/secretary health and medical education department anddirector SKIMS to file a detailed report before it on the next date of hearing.

“Due to bloodtransfusion reaction and use of substandard equipments in the blood bank, fivepatients have died (at the SKIMS) in the past one month,” the SHRC said in itsorder

“As per the doctors, use of ‘inferior material’ was leadingcause of the transfusion reaction, putting patients at risk,” reads SHRC order.

The Commission said prima facie the report discloses “graveviolation of human rights and negligence of the authorities at SKIMS”.

Meanwhile, SKIMS authorities have refuted the reports aboutblood transfusion reactions.

“This is in response to the news reports that there have been five transfusion reactions at SKIMS, but it is far from truth. The first and only transfusion reaction reported has been that of one patient recently treated at SKIMS.

Even in that patient there is no case of mismatched transfusion. The requisition form, cross match and reception notes of blood bank have been checked and found order. The post transfusion blood samples of that patient showed no signs of mismatched transfusion.

Any other transfusion reaction in any patient would also have been picked had it actually happened. SKIMS strongly refutes allegations of any further transfusion reaction in any other patient,” PRO SKIMS said in a statement.
