Avoid this danger

The weathermen have once again alerted us about more snowfall in the days to come. Of course it is not something that we are to witness first time. We have seen snowfall this year multiple times. And otherwise also snow is a part of our lives in Kashmir. But what worries is that with a heavy snowfall life is thrown completely out of gear and many things erupt as challenges for us. One such challenge at the administrative level is the management of traffic. It is not just about slow movement of traffic, or may be occasional jams, but the most daunting challenge is to avert accidents because of the road surface turning slippery. Just these days when the night temperature has dipped significantly, and the sky is relatively open during the nights, we have seen how dangerous the driving is in the mornings. In fact a detailed report on this, in Greater Kashmir, brought the matter to limelight. So in the days ahead when the night temperature is expected to be low, and then there is a snow forecast in the days to come, the danger of driving on our roads would multiply. In this case there is need of monitoring the traffic movement in the early hours, and also issue a kind of advisory to all to drive slow, and be vigilant while negotiating curves. What is also required is to publicise the matter, and also advise the general public to drive in the mornings only if it is necessary for them to move out, else wait till late morning, so that the road surface is safer for driving. The concerned departments also need to mobilises their human resource and make sure that there is no fast driving that could lead to an accident. What is particularly required is to ask the two wheelers to ensure wearing helmets, and drive at very low speed. The tuition centres in the valley can also be asked to reschedule the classes so that moving out in the frosty mornings is avoided.
