ASI, civilian killings fallout | Security enhanced, searches intensified across Kashmir

Srinagar: A day after the killing of a Police Sub-Inspector in Bijbehara and a civilian in old Srinagar, security was further enhanced and searches intensified in the summer capital and elsewhere in Kashmir. Police said a hunt was underway to track the involved.

Reports said that multiple checkpoints and roadblocks were erected across Srinagar.

“The security apparatus has been more stringent and searches have been intensified. Police and CRPF (Central Reserve Police Force) parties have been patrolling in larger numbers and also there are sudden searches of vehicles,” police said.

“The number of bulletproof mobile bunker vehicles deployed at sensitive places has also been increased and the high-tech CCTV surveillance enhanced,” officials said, adding that more police and paramilitary forces have also been deployed in Lal Chowk and other areas of the city as preventive measures.

“Police and paramilitary forces have been deployed in strength at many places in the city and elsewhere in the Valley to thwart any attempts to disrupt by the inimical elements,” a senior police said adding that a random search of vehicles and checking and frisking of people is being carried out at several places across the Valley to keep a check on the movement. “There is checking, frisking, and drone surveillance and we are using technical surveillance,” said an officer.

There were also reports of “speculative CASOs” in parts of Srinagar. However, during operations no one was arrested. “More area dominations have been carried out at almost all parts of Srinagar,” one of the senior police officers said, adding that vigil has been stepped up in Srinagar.

“To instill a sense of security among the residents, security agencies have taken a slew of additional measures. Random checking of vehicles and frisking of people was being done as part of the security drill. Policemen in civvies have been deployed in every nook and corner of the city to gather the intelligence and monitor the movement of suspects,” the officer said. “In most parts of the city, CCTV surveillance has been updated and movement of the public is monitored,” the officer added.

On Wednesday, militants shot dead a civilian in Srinagar and a policeman in Bijbehara area of Anantnag.

Reports of heightened security were also received from south and north Kashmir districts.

They said there has been more patrolling and area domination.
