Cong demanded political process, assembly polls in all-party meet: Mir

Jammu, June 26: Pradesh Congress Committee chief GA Mir today said that they demanded initiation of political process and holding of assembly elections in Jammu and Kashmir in the Prime Minister’s All Party-Meet in New Delhi on June 24.

Speaking to journalists here, Mir said: “Congress raised the demand to initiate the political process, holding assembly elections so that we have an elected government in J&K.”

“One meeting will not solve the issues, but these efforts should continue so that peace returns to J&K which creates an atmosphere for development and prosperity,” said Mir.

“You (BJP) can’t force your decisions on the people in a democratic country. The issues can be resolved with discussion and consultations. It was missing in the past, but it (All Party-Meet) was a welcome step and it should continue,” he added.

“We presented the viewpoint of the people of J&K against the unilateral decisions of Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s Government whether constitutional or developmental since August 5, 2019 as it adversely affected all sections of society i.e. traders, students, miners, transporters, businessmen and others.”

“We also presented a futuristic roadmap in the meeting as per the aspirations of the people of Jammu and Kashmir. The people are against downgrading of the State into a Union Territory, its bifurcation into two UTs, and removal of protection to the people (special status). We raised this issue forcefully in the meeting,” he added.

He said that the presentation given by the Government with regard to the Delimitation Commission in the All Party-Meet ensured participation of all the political parties which was missing in the past.

“If the process is adopted in a transparent manner, the Congress party would have no objection to the delimitation process if it involves all the political parties,” he added.
