Dengue cases mount to 1023 in Jammu region

Jammu: At least 1023 dengue cases have surfaced in Jammu region mostly from the residential areas of Jammu urban, whereas an advisory has also been issued by the National Centre for Disease Control (NCDC) with regard to various viruses including dengue and zika.

“We have registered 1023 dengue cases in the Jammu region. Most of these cases have come from Jammu,” said State Malariologist, Dr Belu Sharma. Dr Sharma said that 649 dengue cases have been seen in Jammu District, 182 from Kathua and 88 from Samba district of the region.

   

“The dengue has mainly spread in urban highly populated residential areas of Jammu West mostly,” said another official from the health department.

Director, Health Services, Dr Renu Sharma quoting National Centre for Disease Control (NCDC) said: “The spike in dengue cases in Jammu is not alarming. But it is an upsurge which happens after every two or three years,”. Further quoting NCDC, Dr Sharma said: “The upsurge is followed by outbreak and then epidemic”

Claiming that the situation is not alarming and it is under control, Dr Sharma said that they have received an advisory from NCDC with regard to all the viral diseases like Japanese encephalitis, dengue, zika, malaria, etc. This advisory has been circulated, she added.

Such advisories are issued every year, she said and added that there was nothing alarming.

The JMC is fogging the infected areas where the people in large numbers have been infected with the dengue.

To review the situation, the Jammu Municipal Corporation Commissioner, Avny Lavasa also took stock of the activities being carried out by the Corporation and Anti-Malaria Wing, Jammu in view of increasing dengue cases.

The officials were directed to cover each ward of JMC in respect of fogging to eradicate the breeding of mosquitoes responsible for spreading dengue, according to the Commissioner.
