JAMMU: 8 major attacks on army camps in 15 years

Over 60 army soldiers, including a few officers, were killed in eight major fidayeen attacks on army camps across Jammu since 2002. According to the details available with Greater Kashmir militants carried out most of the suicide attacks in the wee hours.  

Militants had attacked the Sunjwan camp in 2003 also. This is the second attack on the same camp in the past fourteen years.

   

On June 28, 2003, two Fidayeen attacked Sunjwan Army installation killing 12 soldiers and injuring seven others. A lieutenant was also killed in the attack.  In Saturday’s attack at Sunjwan Army camp, 5 soldiers and a civilian were killed.  

On 14 May 2002, militants carried out a major attack at Kaluchak Army camp and inflicted heavy causalities. Twenty two army men and their family members were killed in the suicide attack.  Before storming into the army camp, militants had attacked a bus and killed seven passengers. At least 25 soldiers were seriously injured in the attack which was carried out by three militants wearing combat uniforms.

On 21 March 2015, three army soldiers and a civilian were injured when two militants attacked an Army camp in Samba.  Two militants were also killed in the six-hour gunfight.

On 22 July 2003, six soldiers died when a group of three militants attacked the camp of the Electrical and Mechanical Engineers at Tanda, near the border town of Akhnoor.  Brigadier V K Govil, in charge of the 16 Corp Headquarters’ Electrical and Mechanical Engineering battalion, was killed in the attack. Northern Command chief, Lieutenant-General Hari Prasad, was also injured in the attack.  Major-General TK. Sapru, General Officer-Commanding of the Akhnoor-based 10 Division, a formation with key responsibilities in the event of an India-Pakistan war, had suffered grenade injuries. Major-General D. Khanna and Brigadier Baldev Singh, too, were injured. 

On 29 November 2016 in a major militant attack on an army camp of 166 Artillery unit of the army at Nagrota, just about three kilometers from 16 Corps Headquarters at Nagrota, in Jammu district, seven army soldiers, including two Majors, were killed.

On 20 March 2015 three policemen were killed when a fidayeen squad of militants stormed into a Police Station in Kathua.

On 9 January 2017, three civilians working as labourers were killed in a pre-dawn militant attack on a GREF camp near LoC in Akhnoor sector of Jammu district.
