Soldier killed, 3 injured in LoC firing

A soldier was killed and three others injured as armies of India and Pakistan exchanged heavy gunfire along the Line of Control in Rajouri district of Jammu and Kashmir, officials said on Monday.

The exchange of fire took place in Keri Battal area in Sunderbani, an official said.

Four army soldiers were injured in Pakistani firing this morning, the official said, adding that one of the critically-injured soldiers succumbed while three others were being treated at a hospital.

The deceased soldier was identified as rifle-man Karamjeet Singh, 24, from Janer village in DharamKot, Moga, Punjab, and is survived by his parents.

A Jammu-based army spokesperson said in a statement that Karamjeet was critically-injured “after Pakistan army resorted to unprovoked ceasefire violation in Sunderbani”. “The soldier later succumbed to his injuries,” he said.

Pakistan initiated unprovoked ceasefire violation by shelling with mortars and firing of small arms along the LoC in Sunderbani at around 5.30am, the spokesperson said.

“Army retaliated effectively and firing stopped at 7.15am,” he said.
