Soldier killed in LoC firing in Rajouri

A soldier was killed in Nowshera area of Rajouri district after Pakistani army allegedly violated ceasefire and targetted several posts along the Line of Control in twin border districts of Rajouri and Poonch, officials said on Sunday.

The incident comes a day after army chief, generalBipanRawat and northern army commander, lieutenant general DevrajAnbu, reviewed security preparedness on the LoC.

   

According to an official, the Pakistani soldiers targeted several Indian posts with rocket launchers in “unprovoked ceasefire violation” along the LoC since last night. The firing at few spots is still going on, he said on Sunday evening.

A source said that a soldier was shot dead by Pakistani sniper in RumliDhara area of Kalal, Nowshera (Rajouri) while he was guarding a border post.

“Pakistan army initiated unprovoked firing on Indian army posts in Nowshera in the early hours, resulting in grievous injures to sepoyJagsir Singh, who later succumbed,” a defence spokesperson said.

Singh, 32, belonged to village LohgarhThakhranWala in Firozepur district of Punjab. He is survived by his wife Mohinder Pal Kaur and two daughters and a son.

Pakistan also targeted several posts and civilian habitations in Khari Karmara, Krishna Ghati, Degwar and Mendhar, according to the official.

“The Pakistan troops fired mortars, automatics and small arms, while the Indian side retaliated effectively,” the defence spokesperson said.
