Youth arrested for running fake social media accounts

Srinagar, June 18: Police have arrested a computer graduate who had allegedly used fake social media accounts to wrongfully allege role of a pharmacist in an anti-militancy operation, Senior Superintendent of Police, Srinagar, Sandeep Choudhary Friday said.

Giving details, the SSP Srinagar said that post-Wagoora Nowgam encounter in which a local militant was killed, a “handler” running accounts on Facebook and Twitter had allegedly held a pharmacist from a minority community responsible for the killing of the militant from Shopian.

“We were sure that the pharmacist had no role whatever in any militancy related operations and he and his family were running their business smoothly,” Choudhary told newsmen during a brief interaction.

He said the police took the matter seriously and SP South city Sajad Ahmad Shah concluded the investigation into it within two days. “The accused who was putting the lives of innocent people in danger was arrested,” the SSP said, adding that the accused was running a Facebook account by the fake name of Urwa Andrabi and his twitter handle by the fake name of Sana Nazki.

“Actually his name is Samiullah, he is a resident of Chattabal and has completed BCA,” Choudhary said. He said that J&K Police have tools and investigation skills to investigate such things. “We are making fervent appeal to people to use social media with utmost care and avoid fake accounts.”
