NC demands ban on alcohol

National Conference, youth, vice-president Kashmir Ahsan Pardesi Monday sought a ban on alcohol in Jammu and Kashmir.

Pardesi, in a statement said that there should be complete ban on the sale of alcohol in the state.

He said there have been “unreported incidents” because of use of alcohol in Srinagar.

“At Sonwar-Batwara road, there have been several accidents due to use of alcohol. It is no excuse that J&K is a tourist place and it cannot be banned,” he said.

He said that states like Gujarat and Rajasthan are also tourist states but have imposed ban on alcohol.

Pardesi said that NC raised the issue in the recently held assembly budget session, adding, “But it is unfortunate that government has maintained silence over the mater.”

However, he said that it is encouraging that people in the state are raising their voice against this evil.

“We hope everybody will play their role to eradicate this evil from the society. I am also surprise that few legislators had claimed that ban on the sale of liquor will hit revenue generation. The other states of India, which have completely banned the sale of liquor, do not complain of any loss of revenue and even nobody is dying from hunger or poverty,” he said.

He said the liquor is mother of all evils and does not only cause cancer like diseases but also disturbs the social fabric by giving birth to many social evils.
