Cross-LoC trade suspended after 5 shells land near Poonch trade centre

The cross-LoC trade was suspended on Wednesday after five mortar shells landed near the trade felicitation centre at Chakan-da-Bagh in Poonch district on Wednesday, officials said.

“Five mortar shells hit the trade facilitation centre atChakan-da-Bagh, damaging a few sheds, including the one housing the X-rayscanner,” custodian of LoC trade centre, Poonch, Fareed Kohli said.

   

He said the shelling took place around 12.30 pm, when theprocess of scanning of the trucks was almost complete.

There were no casualties, but the shelling caused panicamong those present at the centre, he said, adding that the main buildingremained safe.

Kohli said the cross-LoC trade was suspended for the day inview of the shelling.

Officials said the shelling started in Krishna Ghati sectoraround 10.30 am and later spread to Poonch sector.

“The employees and all other people present at the centrewere shifted to an underground bunker built at the centre,” seniorsuperintendent of police, Poonch, Ramesh Angral, said.

Meanwhile, deputy commissioner, Poonch, Rahul Yadav, toldGreater Kashmir: “31 trucks from the other side were pushed back from theimmigration point on this side of the LoC after mortar shells hit the tradefacilitation centre.”He added, “Two shells in the compound of tradefacilitation centre, while three fell nearby.”
