Day 3: Mughal Road remains closed

Over 104 vehicles continue to remain stranded on the Mughal Road, which remained closed for the third consecutive day on Saturday. 

Meanwhile, the authorities claimed to have rescued over 150 people from the snow-hit road during the last two days. 

   

Senior superintendent of police Poonch Rajiv Pandey told Greater Kashmir, “Several vehicles got stranded on the Mughal Road due to heavy rainfall. Rescue operation has been going on since Friday morning and we have already managed to rescue 150 people so far.” 

He further said that around 30 passengers, travelling in eight light motor vehicles, were rescued on Friday morning, while 60 truckers were rescued on the afternoon of the same day.

The SSP informed that another distress call was received on late Friday night, after which a rescue operation was launched. “67 drivers and cleaners were rescued in the operation that continued till 3 am Saturday,” he added.

“Teams of police, civil administration and army are jointly carrying out rescue operations,” the SSP said.

Another police official said that approximately 104 vehicles are still stranded on the Mughal Road, but all the passengers, drivers and cleaners have been rescued. “Most of the stranded vehicles are fruit laden trucks,” he added.

He further said that snowfall has reached upto one-and-a-half feet at Peer kiGali.

General officer in commanding Romeo Force Maj Gen PS Bajwa told media persons that rescue operation has been conducted in assistance with other authorities and the people stuck on the snow-hit road have been rescued.
