Russia observes National Day of Mourning for victims of Moscow Concert Hall shooting

New Delhi, Mar 24: Dr S Jaishankar, Minister of External Affairs, reached out to Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov to express heartfelt condolences following the tragic terrorist attack that occurred on Friday at a concert hall on the outskirts of Moscow. The attack claimed the lives of 133 individuals, with 140 others sustaining injuries.

In a statement shared on the social media platform “X,” Minister Jaishankar stated, “I spoke with Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov, conveying our deepest condolences for the loss of lives in the appalling terrorist attack in Moscow.”

   

Prime Minister Narendra Modi yesterday also condemned the terrorist attack, which targeted innocent civilians, including women and children.

Prime Minister Modi took to “X” to express solidarity, stating, “We strongly condemn the heinous terrorist attack in Moscow. Our thoughts and prayers are with the families of the victims. India stands united with the government and people of the Russian Federation during this tragic time.”

Following the attack, the Islamic State (ISIS) claimed responsibility, sparking international condemnation and concern. The United States has confirmed that it shared intelligence regarding a threat earlier this month. The Islamic State (IS) has now released a shockingly graphic video depicting their massacre, reportedly filmed using bodycams worn by the attackers.

Today, Russia observes a National Day of Mourning in remembrance of the victims of the tragic incident at the packed concert venue in Moscow.

Russian President Putin declared March 24 as a National Day of Mourning, honouring those who lost their lives in the terrorist attack at Crocus City Hall in Moscow’s suburbs. Flags fly at half-mast, numerous events have been cancelled, and television schedules have been adjusted to reflect the sombre mood.

Locals in Moscow have erected a memorial near Crocus City Concert Hall, adorned with flowers and toys, symbolizing the innocent lives lost, including children. Candles illuminate screens at the Exhibition of Achievements of National Economy (VDNKh) in Moscow, as people gather to light candles in honour of the victims. Subway stations in Moscow display candles on information screens, bearing the inscription, “We mourn.”

Meanwhile, authorities apprehended four terrorists involved in the attack near the Ukrainian border, with the case undergoing federal investigation. President Putin addressed the nation yesterday assuring that Russia will pursue justice for the victims and hold both the perpetrators and masterminds of the terrorist attack accountable. He called for global cooperation in combating the scourge of international terrorism.
