Fruit trucks being stopped on highway for days: Exporters

Kashmir fruit exporters today alleged that the fruit laden trucks were being stopped near Jawahar Tunnel by the traffic police for four to five days due to which the fruit gets rotten; the claim was refuted by the latter.

President, Fruit Traders’ Association, Sopore, Fayaz Ahmed Malik alleged that the trucks were being stopped near the Tunnel and allowed to go ahead on pick and choose basis against consideration.

“Every day trucks laden with fruit leave Kashmir for different parts of the country. But they are stopped for

four to five days on the highway without disclosing any reason,” he alleged

Inspector General of Police, Traffic J&K, T Namgyal told Greater Kashmir that they have not imposed any restriction on the movement of fruit laden trucks on Srinagar-Jammu Highway or the Mughal Road.

“We have given them free movement. However, there is one-way traffic movement on Ramban stretch of the highway,” he said, and claimed that over 7000 trucks loaded with fruit crossed Jawahar Tunnel in last 20 hours.

He said: “They (fruit trucks) can also go from Mughal Road from Shopian anytime. We do not stop them anywhere. We rather facilitate their movement so that their fruit does not get rotten.”
