Hailstorm, cloudburst aftermath

The loss due to the hailstorm and cloudburst on Tuesday in areas of Thannamandi in Rajouri and some parts of Surankote in Poonch swelled on Wednesday.

According to preliminary reports, 60 small animals were killed in Chamrer, apart from the 110 in Thannamandi, while standing crop on 2000 kanals and around a dozen orchards suffered extensive damage in Rajouri district.

   

“Mohammed Yousif, son of Alam Din and a resident of Androoth Rajouri and Noor Ahmed, son of Abdul Ghani and a resident of Nadyala Rajouri were on the move to higher reaches and were camping at Chamrer village of Surankote near DKG, when the hailstorm wreaked havoc,” ADC Poonch Dr Basharat Hussain told Greater Kashmir.

He said that a total of 60 animals of both these families were killed, including 35 sheep and 25 goats. “We deputed a team to the spot and the necessary formalities have been conducted and aid will be provided to these families,” he further said.

Meanwhile, the hailstorm and cloudburst also led to a major loss to farmers. “As per preliminary reports, standing crop on 2000 kanal of fields in the district got damaged. Dozens of fruit-laden orchards also suffered damages,” the Rajouri administration said.

Furthermore, the electricity to Thanamandi town and some nearby areas was restored in the morning while efforts are being made to restore the power supply to the rest of the areas as well, the administration said.
