After 39-day long strike, Patwaris to resume work today

Patwaris on Thursday deferred the strike they had been on for last 39 days, and resolved to resume duties from June 22.

The patwaris under the banner ‘All J&K Patwar Association’ had gone on strike from 14 May 2018 after the government “failed” to redress their grievances within the time limit that the aggrieved had fixed.

On Thursday, the executive body of the association led by its provincial president Peerzada Fayaz Ahmad Baba called on the Financial Commissioner, Revenue, and reiterated their demands.

“It was a fruitful meeting. We were satisfied by the response of the Financial Commissioner, Revenue,” Baba told Greater Kashmir.

He said earlier they had also called on B B Vyas, the advisor to the Governor, who “assured us that he would take up our demands with the Governor.”

“On the assurance of the advisor to the Governor we unanimously decided to defer the ongoing strike for next two months,” he added.

He said all the district presidents of the association across the state “have been conveyed the decision and asked to resume the duty from June 22.”

“We are optimistic that the assurances issued today by the government will be fulfilled within stipulated time. We thank all those who extended their cooperation and support to our genuine demands,” he said.

Meanwhile, an official handout said, “The meeting with the Financial Commissioner Revenue discussed various issues pertaining to Patwaris across the state. The Financial Commissioner Revenue assured them that their genuine demands shall be considered sympathetically in due course by the state government. The association agreed to call off their strike with immediate effect.”

The strike had affected the work in the revenue department while the people had complained that they couldn’t obtain important revenue documents during the past 39 days.

The patwaris among others were demanding abolition of direct recruitment of naib tehsildars, placement of GQs to the post of naib tehsildars, timely conduct of DPC, etc.
