Amarnath Yatra resumes in Kashmir Himalayas after two days

The annual Amarnath Yatra resumed after two days on Sunday after pilgrims from the two base camps in the Kashmir Valley were permitted to move towards the cave shrine.

The pilgrimage was suspended due to incessant rains across Jammu and Kashmir.

Situated 12,756 feet above sea-level, the Himalayan cave shrine houses an ice stalagmite structure that waxes and wanes with the phases of moon.

Devotees believe the ice stalagmite structure symbolises mythical powers of Lord Shiva.

An official said the movement of yatris from the Baltal base camp towards the cave shrine was scheduled to start at 5 am but after reviewing the situation it was allowed to start at around 7 am.

A police official at Baltal control room told Greater Kashmir  that the two landslides which had hit the Baltal -cave shrine track at Brarimarag and Matha-theekry were cleared after which yatris were allowed to move by foot towards the cave shrine.

He said that around 7000 pilgrims left for the cave in separate batches.
