Gauge at 10 pm: Jhelum water level receding in both Srinagar, south Kashmir

The water level in Jhelum river is receding both in south Kashmir and Srinagar, much to the relief of people putting up in low-lying areas and near the river embankments.

While the water level in the river has been consistently receding at Sangam in south Kashmir, the level has started to come down at Ram Munshibagh in Srinagar during past few hours.

According to the recordings released by the Irrigation and Flood control on its online app, the water level was 22.13 ft and 20.87 ft at Sangam and Ram Munshi Bagh at 10 pm respectively.

While the water levels are still above the danger mark, the chances of any major flooding have decreased, according to an official of the flood control department.

Meanwhile, Sonam Lotus, director of the MET department told IANS that there had been relatively lesser rainfall in the Kashmir Valley during the last 12 hours as compared to the previous corresponding period.

“There would be light rainfall in the state during the next 24 hours (till Sunday) and there is no likelihood of any major flood in the valley.

“At the same time, the possibility of low lying areas getting inundated cannot be ruled out.

“People need not panic, but remain alert,” Lotus said.
