Despite timely warning of snowfall, authorities fail to clear Kupwara roads

Despite timely prediction of heavy snowfall, authorities are yet to clear the roads and restore electricity in several areas of North Kashmir’s Kupwara district.

“The road leading to Shahabad is yet to be cleared, my mother was not feeling well, but due to snow accumulated on the road I was not able to take her to hospital,” said Mohammad Akbar of Warnow.

   

The electricity is yet to be restored on second day in many areas of Kupwara with the authorities saying the restoration work was on. “It has been 30 hours now that we have not seen electricity,” Mohammad Akbar added.

Most of the areas of Kupwara like Lolab, Qalamabad, Kralpora, Vilgam, Sogam, Tarathpora, Mawer are complaining that they have not received electricity for last two days. 

“We have restored electricity to all receiving stations, from the receiving stations efforts are on to restore the electricity to households,” said Ex En PDD, Shameem Ahmad.

“Due to the heavy snowfall in Kupwara, most of the areas remained cut off from the district headquarter due to continuous snowfall for consecutive two days. We have only restored the main roads, but men and machines are on the job to restore the inner links too,” said an official of the R&B department.

The Sadhna top which connects Karnah area with Kupwara town has received several feet of snow which has closed the road for third consecutive day. “With the improvement in weather the clearance will be started,” said an official.

Farkiyan which connects Keran, and Z-gali connecting Machil areas with district headquarters have been closed for last 21 days. “We are facing serve hardships due to the closure of the road,” said a local of Keran, Naseem Ahmad.

Meanwhile, police post Langate helped many stranded vehicles on the Handwara-Langate road to move towards their destinations. “Police is always ready to help the general public, our team swung into action and cleared the road, stranded vehicles were allowed to move,” said Jan Mohammad, D.O Langate police post.
