A civilian who received bullets in clashes with government forces on the sidelines of an encounter in Batmadan Shopian on December 19, succumbed to his injuries on Tuesday after battling for life for 27 days.
Mohammad Ayub Mir, 40, a resident of Mulu Chitragaam, had received three bullets.
“He was undergoing treatment but today his condition deteriorated and he died,” a local resident said.
Protests were held in the village soon after the news about his death spread.
People from different villages reached the village and held pro freedom protests.
Later the body was taken to the local graveyard amid pro-freedom and anti-India slogans.
Hundreds of people participated in his funeral which was held in the afternoon.
Ayub, who was a laborer, is survived by three children including two daughters and a son.
“Ayub had gone to Batmadan to his sister’s home where he was shot,” one of his relatives said.
Two militants were killed in the encounter of December 19. A lactating woman was killed and over 50 protesters injured in clashes with government forces while the forces razed to ground five residential houses and three cowsheds.
