PIL ON FOOD ADULTERATION; File compliance on Food Safety and Standard Act in a week: HC to Govt

The High Court on Monday granted one week’s time to government to inform it about the steps taken for implementing Food Safety and Standard Act in Jammu and Kashmir.

Hearing a Public Interest litigation against food adulteration, a division bench of Justice Ali Muhammad Magrey and Justice Sanjeev Kumar directed additional advocate general Shah Aamir to submit the compliance report vis-à-vis the implementation of the Act within a week.

The direction followed after Advocate Aamir informed the court that he has received the report from Jammu just on Monday morning and shall submit the same during the course of the week. “The government is serious about the implementation of the Act. Every concrete step will be taken to implement the Act,” Shah told the court.

The Court ordered the state counsel to file the action taken report within a week, listing the case after three months.

In 2016, the High Court had taken suo-moto cognisance of news reports published in Greater Kashmir on the food adulteration and rising cancer incidence and treated them as a Public Interest Litigation.
