Weatherman on Thursday predicted rain and snowfall during the next 24-hours across Jammu and Kashmir.
“Plains are likely to get rains while the upper reaches may witness fresh snowfall from Friday onwards,” Mukhtar Ahmad, deputy director MeT Srinagar told Greater Kashmir.
People in Kashmir have been waiting for sufficient rains and snowfall since the winter commenced. The short duration and lesser quantity of rains and snow have disappointed the people so far.
The Chillai-Kalan, harshest 40-day period of winter, ended on January 31 without a major snowfall in Kashmir. It was one of the driest Chillai-Kalans in the past four decades.
An official informed that Srinagar witnessed a six-year-low night temperature in December 2017 and settled at minus 6.7 degrees Celsius.
Divisional administration issues advisory:
Divisional administration Kashmir Thursday evening issued an advisory stating that there are chances of widespread rains and snowfall in Kashmir division from February 23 to 25.
“There is forecast of heavy rain and snowfall in the higher reaches of Kashmir and moderate precipitation is expected at widespread places in the division which may affect transportation mainly through the Srinagar-Jammu highway during this period,” the advisory states.
“All the deputy commissioners of Kashmir division have been asked to take necessary precautionary measures in their respective districts. People living in these avalanche prone areas have been advised to remain alert and stay away from the heights,” it added.
