Stranded Keran residents crave helicopter service home

Dozens of residents from border area of Keran, the only road link to which is currently blocked by snow, have demanded the helicopter service home that had been officially approved for them in such situations.

The stranded people include students, employees, and patients who had come to Srinagar for treatment. Many of them are staying in hotels.

“A few days back ago three pregnant ladies developed complications and one among them died along with stillborn child. Only then did the administration provide chopper for the other two patients,” said Saddam Hussain from Keran.

He said the assistant commissioner revenue (central) who oversees the chopper operation told them the service is not for local passengers.

“But there is a government order that directs the administration to provide the service,” he said.

Shrafat Ali, another resident from the area, said, “I had come here 20 days back to take my kid for a health check. I am staying in a hotel. I work in Keran and I have no means to go there. I am stuck here with my kid.”

Deputy commissioner Kupwara Khalid Jahangir said the “service in already in place”. He advised the stranded people to contact the assistant commissioner revenue.

ACR (central) Qazi Irfan said the service is new in the area and they have just started the trials.

“Since the place has a harsh terrain the pilots expressed some concerns related to helipad and landing. We will sort out these issues and service will be provided without any delay,” Irfan said.
