Teachers, students urge authorities to reschedule school timing in south Kashmir districts

The teacher and student community from Kulgam and Shopian districts of south Kashmir on Monday appealed authorities to reschedule school timing.

Scores of students from far off areas in Kulgam and Shopian said that they are finding it difficult to reach their respective schools on time due to absence of public transport during early morning hours and urged authorities to reschedule school timings in the two districts.

“As public transport is not available early in the morning, I have to leave for my school around 7 am,” said Huzaifa, a 12th standard female student who has to travel a distance of seven kilometers every day to reach her school.

She added that she is really in a fix whether to continue her studies as a regular candidate or opt for private examination.

Her thoughts were seconded by other students who said after authorities changed school timing from 9 am to 3 pm, student as well as teacher community in the two districts are finding it hard to reach school on time.

“The area has been on boil from past two years. To attend schools so early is rather a dicey affair for both the teachers as well as students,” said a government teacher hailing from Shopian who wished not to be named.

Another teacher from the district said: “As authorities’ does not provide transport facility to state run schools, it becomes difficult for us to catch the public transport so early”.

A group of students and teachers also said they are also vulnerable to attacks from wild animals during early morning hours.
