Work on two-lane Wayil bridge across Sindh may begin soon

The much awaited construction of two-lane Wayil bridge over Nallah Sindh on Kangan-Wayil-Ganderbal road has been finally approved for execution to begin soon, official said.

The approval for the bridge funded by World Bank camefollowing strong resentment  among thelocal residents against long delay in its construction.

The road is one of Kashmir valley’s busiest.

Greater Kashmir has learned that though the Border RoadsOrganisation (BRO) started construction work on the bridge in 1988-89 bybuilding two abuts and a center pillar, but in 1990 it was left halfway.

Later in 1992, floods completely destroyed the two abuts andthe centre pillar. The floods also caused massive damage to a single-lanewooden bridge constructed in 1960 over Nallah Sindh which was situated metersaway from the existing one.

The BRO later constructed a Bailey bridge at the same placeon an emergency basis which stays.

But the narrow bridge causes frequent traffic jams in thearea angering students, businessmen and common people alike.

The residents of vast areas along the Sindh Nallah have forlong been demanding the bridge be made into a two-lane one to ease pressure inthe area and save time for commuters.
