NOWSHERA ACID ATTACK CASE | Court to fast-track trial

A local court here will hear Nowshera acid case twice in a week to take its trial on fast-track basis.

The court of Principal District and Sessions Court Srinagarannounced holding of speedy trial after special prosecutor advocate AA Telimade submission for it.

   

In coming week, the court now will hear case on Wednesdayand Thursday.

Special prosecutor AA Teli submitted before the court thatspeedy trial is the right of both accused and victim.

“In this case, the crime against women has been committed.Speedy trial will ensure justice to her. The court may hear case twice in aweek to fast track the trial,” he submitted before the court while referring tovarious provisions of law and Supreme Court judgments.

On 11 December 2015, a 22-year-old law student wasgrievously injured in the acid attack near Nowshera on the outskirts ofSrinagar when she was on her way to her college.

It was only after a fortnight following the attack, that thepolice arrested the accused duo Irshad Amin Wani, alias Sunny, and MuhammadOmar for their alleged involvement in the incident.

The police has sought punishment for the accused on threecounts under Sections 326-A (voluntary throwing acid to cause grievousinjury),120-B-9 (criminal conspiracy) and 201 (destruction of evidence) of theRanbir Penal Code (RPC).

If proven, these sections can get of rigorous imprisonmentfor 10 years, which can be extended up to life imprisonment.

Special prosecutor AA Teli said more than 75 percent of thetrial and examination of witnesses by court had been held so far.

“Both the accused were brought before the court for today’shearing,” he said.

He informed that during today’s proceedings, the courtrecorded statement of two prosecution witnesses among which a witness was alsocross examined by one of the defence counsels.
