In Upper House; NC, PDP, Congress condemn Shopian killings

The Upper House on Monday witnessed noisy scenes after opposition members demanded arrest of army major against whom FIR has been lodged for killing two youth in Shopian.

Following protest by opposition members, the Chairman suspended the question hour and allowed discussion on the killings.

The opposition as well as ruling party members condemned the killings and asked the government to take magisterial probe to its logical end.

NC’s QaisarJamshid Lone said the government should complete the magisterial probe in a time bound manner. “The army man against whom FIR has been lodged should be punished,” he said. The NC member also said the government of India should initiate a fruitful dialogue with Pakistan and Hurriyat Conference to resolve a Kashmir issue.

Ruling BJP member Sunil Ambardar accused Pakistan of making terrorism an official component of its defense saying that people in J&K are not allowed to negate the violence.

“We are bearing brunt of influence of Pakistan here and we are not even able to say that we should negate the violence,” he said.

PDP MLC YasirReshi said the killings are unacceptable and cannot be justified.

“But we should not make it an issue between army and civilians or police, it has to be dealt logically,” he said. Reshi said nothing was achieved from the experiments made from past 70 years to resolve Kashmir issue but the “spark among the youth continues to prevail.”

Reshi said youth have a sense of defeat in mind which provokes them to choose path of violence. “We can’t start a blame game over this issue against a particular party,” the PDP MLC said.

Congress MLC G N Monga accused the army of getting involved in politics.

He said the incidents of stone pelting and other law and order problem was to be taken care by J&K government but army was getting involved unnecessarily.

“Situation is dealt by J&K government and police but when it is given in the hands of army it results in killings which ultimately brings shame to army which otherwise is a disciplined force,” he said.
