Modi came to power on Kashmir politics; not his priority now: Azad

Former Chief Minister Ghulam Nabi Azad today said the Modi Government in New Delhi was formed on the basis of “Kashmir politics, its security in particular and national security in general” but that is not part of government’s agenda now and the people here are most insecure and dying.

The senior Congress leader said the main promise on which BJP and Prime Minister Narendra Modi got mandate was to provide security to Kashmir, its people and the Army men and talk eye to eye with Pakistan but the people here are most insecure and are dying on borders as government’s priorities now are different.

“The BJP got 80% of its seats in the name of security for Jammu and Kashmir, its people in particular, and national security in general but that is not part of the government’s agenda now as the Prime Minister is busy in something else and teaching policy to US, Britain etc,” Azad said addressing a press conference here today.

“During his election campaigning, more than 80% of the times, Modi raised the issue of Kashmir, promising security to people of Jammu and Kashmir, national security, and mentioning beheading of soldiers, he dubbed the UPA Government as a weak government,” Azad said while adding, “I want to remind the Prime Minister to fulfill the promises and provide security to people of Jammu and Kashmir”.

He added, “Fulfill the promise on which you got the mandate,” he said.

Accusing the Modi Government of having no policy to deal with Pakistan, Azad said, “The people in Kashmir are dying, they are insecure on borders, especially in five districts of Jammu region, but the government is indecisive”.

“Jammu and Kashmir is border state having sensitive borders with Pakistan and China so Government of India cannot take it lightly. Therefore there must be a solid foreign policy,” Azad said.

“Hot pursuit is not yielding any results,” he said.

“Sometimes you (Prime Minister) follow hot pursuit policy and sometimes you go and attend birthday party and marriage party of the Prime Minister of Pakistan and the result is that people here are dying,” Azad said.

“The government has to be decisive that whether it wants to follow hot pursuit policy or it wants to have parties,” Azad added.

He said that there are more than 2500 ceasefire violations during three and a half years of Modi Government as compared to around 350 violations during 10 years of UPA Government besides a large number of civilians and Army men have died during the tenure of Modi Government.

“Modi dubbed UPA Government as most weak government, now tell us what is happening, and of this magnitude,” he said referring to firing on borders.

He said that until and unless there is a permanent solution to the problem, firing from Pakistan will continue and people on borders will continue to suffer and remain unsettled.

For solution of the Kashmir problem, he said, “We (UPA Government) appointed interlocutors, working groups and also engaged with people and we achieved almost 75% results but what is this government dong, it has no Kashmir policy and Pakistan policy.”

“BJP has the mandate to decide the foreign policy which it must do to find a permanent solution to the problem so that people of Jammu and Kashmir do not suffer any more,” Azad said.
