Nomad dies, 150 sheep perish in sudden snowfall

A nomadic shepherd died and 150 sheep from a flock he was herding perished after they were likely caught in a blizzard in the high mountains of Pir Panjal on way from Budgam to Rajouri, police and witnesses said.

The nomad, Usman Ali son of MohdAslam of Androoth village in Rajouri was trekking back home in the high mountains on Friday when his group and their livestock were caught in the sudden snowfall.

   

The exact circumstances of Ali’s death and how the livestock of 150 sheep and goats perished were not immediately known. Ali’s body was brought back to Surankote by his family and a team of a police from Poonch.  Seniour superintendent of police for Poonch, Rajiv Pandey also said the body of the  nomad was handed over to his family.

Four other nomads were injured as they were probably caught in a blizzard. They were identified as MohdAslam son of Abdul Majeed,  Mehar Ali son of Javed Ahmed, MohdYaqoob son of GhulamQadir and MohdYousaf son of Abdul Aziz, all residents of Androoth.

They were admitted in PHC Chandimarh for treatment and later discharged.
