Kashmir killings, child rape and murder: CM to chair ‘crucial’ party meet on Saturday

Amid fresh spate of civilian killings in Kashmir and criticism of government over rape and murder of a child in Kathua, Chief Minister Mehbooba Mufti has summoned party ministers, legislators, senior leaders and officer bearers for a “crucial” meeting at her Gupkar residence here on Saturday.

A senior minister confirmed that the meeting was scheduled at 2 pm, but didn’t reveal the agenda of the meeting.

The position taken by some BJP members including two ministers in the gruesome rape and murder of an eight year old Bakerwal girl in Kathua during has not only attracted strong criticism for the government but has put the PDP, BJP’s ally in the government, in dock.

“The Chief Minister and the party are of the firm opinion that justice will be delivered in the case. The meeting will discuss the case and deliberate how things should be handled,” said another senior party leader.

Earlier, the Chief Minister reiterated that the justice would be served in the gruesome case that shook the entire state.

“The law will not be obstructed by the irresponsible actions & statements of a group of people. Proper procedures are being followed, investigations are on the fast track & justice will be delivered (sic),” Mehbooba tweeted.

In Kashmir, criticism is mounting against the PDP over recent civilian killings in Kulgam and Shopian. This month alone nine civilians have been killed by the forces at the gunfight sites or during clashes.

“There is no denying the fact that the situation in Kashmir is worrying and it is the PDP which is bearing the brunt. This too will come up for discussion,” said the party leader.

The party is also facing flak over the absence of its minister and senior party leader from the scene in Kashmir as the situation continues to deteriorate. Except for the Chief Minister who visited the family of youth who was killed allegedly by police in Kangan, none of the party ministers or senior members has tried to reach out to people.
