“Heroin recovery case handed over to NCB”

The Jammu and Kashmir police have handed over the heroin recovery case to Narcotics Control Bureau (NCB), Jammu for further investigation, a police official told Greater Kashmir on condition of anonymity.

“The case was handed over to the NCB Jammu on the day the consignment was seized and two drug peddlers arrested from Narwal area of the district,” he said.

Two people, both locals, driver and helper, were arrested by the Trikuta Nagar police from outside Hotel Radisson Blue, Narwal on the Jammu-Pathankot Highway on August 6 and 50 kilograms of high quality heroin worth Rs 250 crore in the drug market was recovered from a truck carrying the scrap.

On being asked the reason for transferring the case to NCB, the police official said, “There are many reasons: First the quantity of the recovered consignment was very high. Usually, police do not deal with cases where consignment is high.”

“Second, the J&K police have to look after other cases related to law and orderand crime. But the NCB is constituted for only purpose of checking the drug smuggling and investigating such cases,” he said.

Third, he said, “Since the case has roots in Afghanistan, Pakistan and the consignment was to be delivered in Punjab, State police’s network is limited to Jammu and Kashmir only, while the NCB’s network is strong even outside the State. So, NCB can investigate the case better than JKP.”

Sources also said that after reaching at a conclusion, the NCB can reward the Jammu and Kashmir police team headed by SHO Trikuta Nagar police station, ParvezSajjad and SOG men, who made the seizure and arrest on the basis of specific inputs.

“And the reward would be unexpected,” they said.
