Keeping headquarter permanently at Leh discrimination with Kargil: PDP

Welcoming the decision to create separate Ladakh division, Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) on Friday said that keeping the headquarter of Ladadkh division permanently at Leh is discriminatory to the larger district of the area- Kargil.

“We have received many suggestions and calls from Kargil today expressing their disappointment with the unilateral decision taken by the governor administration in their attempt to please the BJP which was recently routed in local bodies elections there and also is facing a crises after the resignation of their MP,” PDP senior leader and former minister Naeem Akhtar said in a statement.

He added that the best resolution to this is to keep the headquarter both at Leh and Kargil at rotational basis. “It should ideally be in winters at Leh because of air connectivity and in summers it should be in Kargil. Unless that is done, this would create more problems in the sensitive region than it would solve,” Akhtar said.

The PDP leader added the decision to keep the headquarter of the new Division permanently at Leh is unacceptable to the people of Kargil and that if PDP comes to power, it will keep the headquarters on rotational mode to ensure no discrimination is melted out to any of the district.

President of Jammu and Kashmir Democratic Party (N) Ghulam Hassan Mir welcomed the announcement of Governor administration to grant divisional status to Ladakh saying this was needed in the interests of the people of the remote region but he demanded the similar divisional status for Chenab Valley, Pir Panchal region, Anantnag and Barmulla.

Jammu and Kashmir Pradesh Congress Committee (JKPCC) also welcomed the decision of making Ladakh as a separate administrative division. “Ladakh is a hilly division with difficult topographies, which remains cut off from the Valley for almost six months during winters and making it as separate administrative division will go a long way in restoring confidence among the people in both Leh and Kargil districts,” he added.

Chairman Peoples Democratic Front (PDF) and former MLA Hakeem Yaseen welcomed government decision to make Ladakh region as a separate administrative division.

In a statement he urged the Governor S P Malik to also fulfill the long pending demand of the people of Chenab Valley and Pir Panchal in Jammu division and Kamraz and Maraz areas in Kashmir to make them as separate administrative divisions.
