News channel booked for labeling Kulgam youths as militants: Police

Jammu and Kashmir police on Wednesday registered a case against a news channel for telecasting pictures of two local youths from Kulgam district labeling them as militants.

Superintendent of police Kulgam, Shridhar Patel said that last week “news channel V6 showed two innocent youth namely Farhan Shafi, a class 12th student, son of Muhammad Shafi resident of Wanigund Qaimoh and Farhat Rashid, a diploma holder, son of Abdul Rashid Wani resident of Redwani Payeen as militants in place of slain Hizbul Mujahideen militant Farhan Wani of Wanigund Kulgam.”

   

Farhan Wani was killed in a gunfight with government forces in Larnoo hamlet of Kokernag area of Anantnag district on 9 January. “The news channel on the same day telecast news wherein they have shown both the innocent youths as militants,” SP said.

A case FIR number 15/2018 was registered in police station Kulgam and further investigation has been taken up, he added.
